In the mountains of Marshall, NC, this artist retreat by Altura Architects is designed as a quiet contemporary escape that feels deeply connected to its wooded surroundings. The home’s black wood siding, expansive glazing, and solar panels give it a modern presence, while still allowing the architecture to settle naturally into the landscape. Throughout the project, the photography focused on the relationship between the home and its environment, from the way the trees frame the exterior to the indoor and outdoor living spaces that open toward the mountain setting. Details like the bold yellow entry, wood-burning stove, warm interior finishes, and outdoor fire pit bring a sense of personality and retreat-like comfort to the space.
